Stages of Care – What is Involved?

Patients typically progress through three stages of care. The first stage focuses on symptomatic relief, such as reducing pain and other discomforts. The second stage addresses tissue healing and functional normalisation. The final stage involves periodic spinal care to prevent new injuries, minimise flare-ups of old injuries, and prevent degenerative spinal processes.

3 Stages of Chiropractic Care

1. Relief Care

Relief care is the initial stage for most patients. The primary goal is to provide symptomatic relief. Treatments focus on techniques and therapies that quickly and effectively reduce pain and discomfort, allowing individuals to continue their daily activities. Patients are generally advised to “take it easy” but are encouraged to stay mobile and functional, provided there is no risk of further injury or tissue damage.

2. Corrective Care

The second stage involves correcting the underlying issues that caused the condition and healing the injured tissues. Achieving a favourable outcome and preventing future recurrences requires strict adherence to the chiropractor’s instructions. Tissues and structures that are not fully healed are prone to future problems. Following appointments, completing home exercises, and adhering to all recommendations are crucial. Patients should be aware that even after pain and discomfort subside, tissue healing and functional correction may be incomplete and often require additional treatments.

3.Wellness Care

Once spinal tissues are healed and spinal biomechanics are normalised, patients are recommended to continue with periodic spinal check-ups. The frequency of these check-ups can vary from once a year to once a month or more, depending on individual needs. Chiropractic spinal check-ups offer similar benefits to dental check-ups, catching minor issues before they cause significant pain, discomfort, and irreversible tissue changes. Like heart attacks, irreversible tissue damage often occurs before symptoms of spinal pain and discomfort become apparent.
