Elbow pain
The elbow is a ball-and-socket joint, where the bones form a cup shape around a slippery, gelatinous sac (forming the “ball”), allowing movement of the joint in more than one direction.
Relief Is Closer Than It Seems
However, it doesn’t have to be all bad news. Over the years, we have treated thousands of patients, and a very high percentage have found their way back to recovery – even when it seemed there was no light at the end of the tunnel. The causes for that irritation and inflammation are most often some combination of overexertion and overuse, though infection, genetics, and degenerative diseases can always play a role as well. The complexity of bones, muscles, and ligaments meeting at this joint coupled with its range of motion can sometimes cause parts of this joint to become irritated or inflamed – the two most common sources of elbow pain.
Cause of Elbow pain
Elbow pain is a common issue we address at the Ipswich Spine Clinic. It is most common in a person’s dominant arm. Although the exact cause is unknown they are thought to be the result of repeated micro-trauma to the tendons of certain forearm muscles close to where those tendons attach to the bottom of the upper arm (the humerus). Strictly speaking they are not inflammatory conditions but a gradual degradation of the involved tissue through inappropriate or unaccustomed overuse. Men and women are equally as likely to be sufferers particularly in the 35-55 age range. Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow are by no means limited to these sports or sports in general. Anyone involved in activities that include repeated gripping and twisting actions, such as gardeners, DIYers, carpenters and plasterers may be more prone to developing Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow especially if they are unaccustomed to these activities. However for some sufferers there appears to be no obvious cause. Once you have had an episode of Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow, you are more likely to have future recurrences. Left untreated the recovery time varies considerably between a few months to 2 years.
