What is a Spinal Adjustment?
Spinal Adjustment
A spinal adjustment is a procedure where a chiropractor applies controlled force to one or more misaligned vertebrae in the spine, known as “subluxations.” This technique is also used in the pelvic region to normalise the sacroiliac joints. Adjustments can be performed manually or with specialised mechanical tools. Chiropractors are the only healthcare professionals trained to deliver these adjustments.
When Should Spinal Adjustments Be Given?
Spinal adjustments are recommended for vertebrae that are out of their proper position or functioning improperly, commonly referred to as vertebral subluxations. Chiropractors use various tests and procedures to identify which vertebrae are affected.
What Do Spinal Adjustments Do?
Adjustments help correct vertebral subluxations, which can:
- Reduce pain and inflammation
- Decrease muscle spasm and tension
- Normalise spinal biomechanics
- Remove nerve irritation and interference
These benefits can improve overall health and wellness. Chiropractic adjustments are the only way to eliminate vertebral subluxations.
The Non-Spinal Adjustment
Chiropractors can also adjust nearly every other joint in the body, including those in the hands, feet, wrists, ankles, elbows, knees, shoulders, hips, ribs, and jaw. Like spinal joints, these joints can become misaligned and fixated. Chiropractic techniques can restore and enhance joint function, increasing joint longevity and minimising wear and tear. This is particularly beneficial for athletes who require optimal joint performance. Adjustments can immediately increase joint range of motion and supply nutrients to the joint cartilage, aiding in waste removal.
